Project: Las Alcantaras
Village Name: Las Alcantaras
People: 160 residents in 25 residences
Houses:  
Project Description:
  • Design will accommodate growth to 160 residents
  • Residents are subsistence farmers
  • System draws water from 3 small springs sending the flows to a single storage tank
  • Simple distribution network provides 14 stands very near residences
  • Pipeline from spring to tank = 626m
  • Distribution network pipeline = 2121m
  • Each family contributed 118 man-days of work
  • Previously drew water from unimproved pits and seasonal streams
  • Previous water never dropped below several hundred coliforms /100ml


Project: Jardin Del Eden
Village Name: Jardin Del Eden
People: 152 residents in 34 residences

Project Description:
  • Access beyond main road is by horse or foot for 15km (9miles)
  • No social services in the village. Some children go to school in nearby community
  • Village is without electricity.
  • 200-600 meters between residences
  • Conduction line: Main Sector; 1373 meters; Ortega Sector: 132 meters;
  • Distribution network: Main Sector; 7997 meters; Ortega Sector; 928 meters
  • Residential outlets: Main Sector, 29; Ortega Sector, 5
  • Latrines: 29 new double thickness latrines installed & 4 latrines rebuilt with double thickness

Village Name: Castillo Norte

Project Description:
  • Access from main road is by mule & horse only
  • The population is dispersed
  • Most families are farmers and ranchers
  • Castillo Norte is a stable community
  • The village has a school with 3 teachers
  • The village has no electricity
  • A satifactory spring has been encapsulated
  • The spring area will be protected with special grazing grasses
  • Conduction line = 436 meters
  • Distribution network = 5057 meters
  • Latrines have been constructed very satisfactorily



Project: Pena Blanca
Village Name: Pena Blanca

Project Description:
  • 2 acres of cuenca to be reforrested
  • holding tank = 1 cubic meter
  • no schools yet = kids go to Ubu Norte
  • community diseases, ie: malaria, diarrhea, dengue fever, etc., should now be much reduced.
  • no roads only trochas
  • spring has small output so only 6 public puestos
  • conduction line, from spring to tank, is only 200 meters
  • distribution line about 2KM
  • 10 latrines have been built

Project Description:
  • ~8km conduction pipe
  • ~8km distribution network
  • latrines provided at each property
  • spring provides 2.17l/sec. Good for 1220 persons
  • 116 outlets installed
  • tank = 28 cubic meters
  • community very poor and 70% are illiterate

  • spring flow of over 41 liters/min - quite adequate
  • conduction line upper tank = 800M
  • conduction line lower tank = 1360M
  • upper tank = 4.0 CU. M capacity
  • lower tank = 8 CU. M capacity
  • distribution network upper neighborhood = 2315M
  • distribution network lower neighborhood = 6231M

Project Description:
  • spring capture & undertaking of reforestation to preserve watershed
  • conduction line = 433 meters
  • distribution network = 633 meters
  • tank = 6 cubic meters
  • 14 residential outlets + 5 "esperanza" stubs for future residences
  • 10 latrines constructed
  • Santa Rosa families are resettled refugees from mudslide disasters of 2004

Project Description:
  • spring flow rate comfortably exceeds requirements for residential outlets
  • transmission line = 400 meters
  • population & residences very dispersed
  • very long distribution network = 8.6km due to dispersal of residences
  • new road provides year round access
  • village has school serving it & surrounding villages
  • village has Protestant chapel

  • spring flow rate comfortably exceeds requirements for residential outlets
  • transmission line = >1 km
  • village residences very scattered
  • long distribution network for number of residences due to dispersal = > 4 km
  • village has school serving 107 students & Catholic chapel
